A Southern Fall

A Southern Fall
By Lisa White - 2004

Fall blows in on southern winds,
Where are the falling leaves of colored blend?
A theory at most, as no evidence will host
Any event that would confirm its arrival.

A forced bulb, the season it senses,
Then opens up under false pretenses.
And as its petals bloom, summer’s ghost still looms
To threaten its very survival.

Shorter days, fallen gardens, and pumpkin jewelry
Convicting evidence that lead all to agree
The charade is over, the season now bolder
Prepares the earth’s spirit for revival.

"Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile." -William Cullen Bryant
